Why I completely disagree with the prospecting language "My business grows through referrals"

There's a LOT of different ways to prospect nowadays, and while I'm pretty supportive of prettttty much any of them, there's one that I just can't seem to get behind.

It's the language that goes something like this...

"Hey X - How did today's meeting go? Great! What did you enjoy most?

Awesome. Now I wanted to share something with you. I grow my business through referrals. I'd love to pick your brain and see who you could introduce me to! Here are the categories of people I work with best...."

If you use this language and it works for you, cool. Keep at it.

But if you've been taught this language and either (1) don't resonate with it, or (2) haven't been successful with it, I want to share a perspective.

When in the F*CK did we decide it was our CLIENT'S JOB to grow our business? 😰

When I hear this language, what I hear is... "You owe me someting!" 😱

To me, it feels sticky. It feels like a weird, funky energy.

And if you're using this language (or similar language) but not getting multiple leads and INBOUND leads, here's something to consider...

👉 Asking for referrals isn't about you (or at least it shouldn't be about you)

One of the things I teach inside my prospecting program is how to flip this COMPLETELY around.

Instead of asking for referrals because you "deserve" them, or because "referrals help grow my business"...

I completely flip this script by asking for referrals specifically by SOLVING A PROBLEM.

Here's the difference.

Old (Sticky) Language:

"I wanted to share something with you. I grow my business through referrals. I'd love to pick your brain and see who you could introduce me to! Here are the categories of people I work with best...."

New (Incredible) Language

"Hey X - I absolutely love working with you! As you know, our team specializes in working with X person. Specifically because X, Y, Z reasons. Who are 3 folks that need help with this that you'd be open to connecting us with?"

👏 When advisors learn this shift, their clients are EXCITED to send referrals because the advisor is solving a specific problem in their life.
